and the two are to pay respects this afternoon to daniel inouye of hawaii. this has been going on for hours. they change the guard every half hour and notables come to pay their respects. senator inouye, of hawaii, first served us as a soldier in world war ii and was a senator, get this, for 50 years. inouye was a war hero. he lost his right arm while leading the platoon into battle in italy and awarded the medal of honor and died on monday of breathing complications at age of 88. he became hawaii's first congressman following statehood in 1969. he won election to the senate in 1962. only 31 people have laid in the cap doll rotunda and the last was gerald ford six years ago and the last senator honored was the democrat humphrey in 1978. he will be escorted to the washington cathedral and returned to hawaii on saturday to honor an american hero who died on monday. senator inouye. >>shepard: senator dole and his wife and harry reid and the rest on the late senator inouye, senator inouye often credited a man he met in world war ii army hospital in italy with getting him into politics. i messag

that the white house saying the president is cutting his holiday vacation in hawaii short to return to d.c. to work on a deal to try to stop those automatic tax hikes and deep spending cuts from kicking in on january 1st. and if they don't reach a deal before then, many economists say we will dip back into a recession. i had henly house republican leaders didn't have a lot of new information for their lawmakers. they would have 48 hour notice if they are needed to pray back to washington from various districts around the country. that tells us they are being noncommittal at this point because they frankly do not know whether or not there will be a deal to avert the fiscal cliff. now, after that conference call. the house speaker john boehner, his number two eric cantor the majority leader put out a statement putting the onus on president obama and for the reason why there has not been a deal so far. basically saying they can't move forward in the house without some sort of action in the senate the next few days. what they left out of that, unfortunately, is the reason why they are waitin

in hawaii where the president is spending the christmas holiday. brianna, the president maybe a little too optimistic that a deal can be reached? aloha, by the way. >> he did say last night that he is a hopeless optimist that something can get done, but what we know, it's not going to be that big package, obviously of deficit reduction as well as dealing with these tax hikes that are set to kick in. that's not what's going to be happening, instead, he's pressing for something smaller just to a deal with stopping those tax hikes from kicking in for americans making $250,000 per year or less. and also trying to make sure that unemployment benefits are extended. listen to what president obama said last night and also listen to what some of the house republican resistance from speaker boehner to his sort of short-term plan here. >> in the next few days, i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction.

left for hawaii he had a meeting at the white house with senate majority leader harry reid and seeing both sides dig in on what they want and i think the smaller package, at least before new year's or right around the beginning of the year is probably the best to hope for. right now they're running out of time. lawmakers aren't returning to town, most of them, until tomorrow. the president won't be back until tomorrow and while most rank and file members won't be involved in the day-to-day negotiations of whatever this deal might be, they're going to have to vote for it. you saw right before christmas, speaker john boehner tried to move his own independent plan to raise taxes on income levels over a million dollars and he wasn't able to do that successfully. and i think it was a big sign about the difficulties he'll have even wrangling the majority of his caucus and so i think in order to get something done, anything done, to make sure that taxes don't increase on middle class americans, to make sure that the spending cuts don't start immediately, a lot of lawmakers are leary of them

. the president is cutting his vacation short to face the fiscal cliff. is he leaving hawaii for washington tonight. if lawmakers don't come up with a deal before the deadline your tax refund could be delayed by months. we are live in the washington bureau to explain more. >> reporter: brian the irs said without a deal as many as 100 million taxpayers may be forced to wait until march to file their tax returns. congress has to vote on the wealth tax and it needs to be adjusted for inflation. both partisay they would agree to it but it's all tied up in the fiscal cliff mess. tax filing season starts next week but the irs would put a hold on that for some. officials would wait for a deal in the new year instead of doing serious reprogramming to their tax system. filing would then be pushed back to march for millions. with refunds coming much later than usual. especially for those who plan on paying off credit card bills that often pile up after the holidays. now all of this could be avoided a deal before the deadline monday night but some long time lawmakers fear it won't happen, more on that
